Jams Dean debuts  the song “Yoga Pants” at Kimball House Rock with DJ Earn Money on the decks. Sharkula was also on hand for the performance, treating the audience to a unique style of improv ad-libs while assuming hype man duties.

This week, New Chi-t appeared on the front page of Chicago Reader. A collaboration between Netherfriends and a slew of Chicago artists, the project was featured in the Hip-Hop segment of The Reader’s  Favorite Music of 2013:

Overlooked Chicago hip-hop | Leor Galil

Netherfriends, New CHI-t
Nomadic indie-popper Shawn Rosenblatt (aka Netherfriends) is no stranger to hip-hop: 2011’sNetherfriends Does Nilsson includes a wobbly, funky tune called “Full of It” with local MC ShowYouSuck. That track also appears on New CHI-t, a rap-centric collection of Netherfriends collaborations featuring local hip-hop acts such as the Whoevers, Fess Grandiose, and Impolite Society. Rosenblatt molds his psychedelic-tinged pop—sometimes peppy, sometimes wistful, sometimes both at once—into the foundation for fun hip-hop tracks. The Sublime-sampling “Summertime” in particular makes me yearn for warm-weather adventures even more than I usually do.

Netherfriends x Jams Dean – “Jams In The Road”

Video shot and edited by Netherfriends

While blogs continue to debate its status as one of the best or worst things to ever upload to the Internet, this video- shot in, out, and around the Kimball House, features Jams Dean rocking over some Beatles loops à la Netherfriends.

Local Loop described the vid as “…an awesomely atrocious stoner movie,” while JP Bombé of Kimball House called it “F@#kin’ awesome!” Lydia Simmons from Sunset In The Rearview said, “…it really is sh!t, and actually just takes away from the fun little tune that I’ve become addicted to over the past 24 hours.”

Speaking of that fun little tune, if the video’s not your thing, you can get the song below. You’re welcome.

Impolite Society (L-R): Kal The God, Fess Grandiose, Khalfani, Blakkass Westley, Elee X

Impolite Society serves up a hefty compilation project that features group and solo work from individual members, and guest appearances from various artists and producers.  For the uninitiated, Bootleg #1 offers a comprehensive introduction to the group; it should also hold over fans familiar with their work until an official full-length is released.

Originally available for download as part of  Join The Studio’s Free Track Friday series, “Crafty” is another off-kilter head-bobber from Nunca Duerma, collaborating with the elusive Detroit-based beat maker, Gord.ie.

The folks at JTS also chopped it up with Nunca D, who had this to say about his tenure in the Windy City:

“…I love Chicago. Never thought I would enjoy living here when I took a random leap of faith two years ago. I’ve been so lucky to have the experience I’ve had thus far, and I’ve received open arms from artist collectives like Push Beats, Kimball House Productions, some of the LOD guys too and have been very surprised how welcoming everyone has been. Chicago is a great place for young up and comers and really fosters an environment of creativity. Most of the collectives I mentioned are really trying to do something new and not follow a pre-fit mold on how things are suppose to be done. It’s them, their art, and no bullshit. I love it.”

Nunca Duerma will be dropping more beat collaborations and one-shot releases in the near-future, all leading up to the release of his upcoming Shapeshifter project.

Netherfriends – “Never Walk Out On You” feat. Elee X & Blakkass Westley

Video shot and edited by Netherfriends

A classic tale of relationships long dead, “Never Walk Out On You” has been a blog and fan-favorite from Netherfriends (with the original Impolite Society lineup of Elee and Wes) ever since the track premiered on Ruby Hornet in August of last year– and re-surfaced to be included on Netherfriends’ first full-length Hip Hop release, New CHI-t, back in July.

The ImSo clique has since expanded, as has the number of available Netherfriends projects, but the three artists took a minute to have some fun and shoot this video, almost a year to-the-day of the song’s original release.  The video was shot here at the Kimball House, it features a lo-fi aesthetic, a plastic leg, a cameo from fellow Impolite member Khalfani, and Blakkass Westley making some of the creepiest facial expressions in a rap video since Redman’s “Time 4 Sum Aksion.”
