Video: Matt Black & Milan Boyer for Young Heavy Souls
The newest edition of artist profile videos from our friends at Young Heavy Souls features Nunca Duerma, who is preparing to release his upcoming full-length, Shapeshifter, on Old Tacoma Records.
We followed Nunca Duerma and his drummer, TJ Devoe, on the road as they played shows in Chicago, Grand Rapids, Kalamazoo & Detroit. We also got some behind-the-scenes footage of their practice sessions.
Also featured in this edition of the Artist Spotlight is an interview with Eliot Lipp (Old Tacoma Records, Pretty Lights Music). We caught up with Eliot before a show in Detroit to talk about ND’s sound and upcoming album “Shapeshifter.”
Track 1: Nunca Duerma – “Girls”
Track 2: Nunca Duerma – “Slap”
Nunca Duerma is a busy man. Over the last several months, he’s released multiple collaborative tracks with other artists while he prepares to drop his new LP, Shapeshifter, on Eliot Lippʼs Old Tacoma Records.
Nunca Dʼs latest offering is a remix of “Bloody Face Handshake” by rapper/producer Jeremiah Jae. Originally from Chicago, Jae recently signed with Warp Records after releasing various projects under Flying Lotusʼ Brainfeeder imprint and making himself a fixture of the Los Angeles beat scene.
In addition to a growing collection of single releases and remixes, Nunca Duerma will be performing select dates throughout the Midwest as Shapeshifterʼs launch date draws closer.
Champagne Safari Tour:
Dec. 22 – Chicago, IL.
Dec. 23 – Grand Rapids, MI.
Dec. 26 – Detroit, MI.
Dec. 28 – Kalamazoo, MI.
More dates TBA.
“The Haunt” is a new cut from Nunca Duerma and Detroit native, Jaws That Bite. With frequent collaborations in the past, this time around the two multi-instrumentalists deliver a macabre track with bump- designed to get heads bobbing and spines tingling.
Nunca Duerma’s new long-player, Shapeshifter (Old Tacoma Records), is still a few months away, but fans can catch him live on The Champagne Safari Tour in December (with San-Fran. beatmaker, Duktap).
Jaws That Bite infuses elements from multiple genres of music to create soundscapes that are unique and organic. MI heads can catch him live on October 28 at the FyouNK Collective in Royal Oak.
Premiering this afternoon on Vibe To This, “Reflections” is the latest Nunca Duerma collaboration, featuring San Francisco-based beatmaker, Duktap. With Duerma’s Shapeshifter long-player just around the corner and Duktap on the eve of releasing Rinsed, the pair of producers is preparing to hit the road on a string of live dates in Chicago and Michigan.
Originally available for download as part of Join The Studio’s Free Track Friday series, “Crafty” is another off-kilter head-bobber from Nunca Duerma, collaborating with the elusive Detroit-based beat maker, Gord.ie.
The folks at JTS also chopped it up with Nunca D, who had this to say about his tenure in the Windy City:
“…I love Chicago. Never thought I would enjoy living here when I took a random leap of faith two years ago. I’ve been so lucky to have the experience I’ve had thus far, and I’ve received open arms from artist collectives like Push Beats, Kimball House Productions, some of the LOD guys too and have been very surprised how welcoming everyone has been. Chicago is a great place for young up and comers and really fosters an environment of creativity. Most of the collectives I mentioned are really trying to do something new and not follow a pre-fit mold on how things are suppose to be done. It’s them, their art, and no bullshit. I love it.”
Nunca Duerma will be dropping more beat collaborations and one-shot releases in the near-future, all leading up to the release of his upcoming Shapeshifter project.
Originally premiered on White Raver Rafting, “Aura Blast” is a collaboration between Nunca Duerma and Ewokie Talkie, who represents Evansville, IN. The two completely discard the “traditional” approach to Drum N’ Bass, and in the process manage to achieve a feel that is simultaneously high-energy and mellow.
Keep an eye out for Shapeshifter- the follow up to Nunca Duerma’s Dilated, released in 2012 on Old Tacoma Records.
