Netherfriends, New CHI-t
Nomadic indie-popper Shawn Rosenblatt (aka Netherfriends) is no stranger to hip-hop: 2011’sNetherfriends Does Nilsson includes a wobbly, funky tune called “Full of It” with local MC ShowYouSuck. That track also appears on New CHI-t, a rap-centric collection of Netherfriends collaborations featuring local hip-hop acts such as the Whoevers, Fess Grandiose, and Impolite Society. Rosenblatt molds his psychedelic-tinged pop—sometimes peppy, sometimes wistful, sometimes both at once—into the foundation for fun hip-hop tracks. The Sublime-sampling “Summertime” in particular makes me yearn for warm-weather adventures even more than I usually do.

Netherfriends – “Never Walk Out On You” feat. Elee X & Blakkass Westley

Video shot and edited by Netherfriends

A classic tale of relationships long dead, “Never Walk Out On You” has been a blog and fan-favorite from Netherfriends (with the original Impolite Society lineup of Elee and Wes) ever since the track premiered on Ruby Hornet in August of last year– and re-surfaced to be included on Netherfriends’ first full-length Hip Hop release, New CHI-t, back in July.

The ImSo clique has since expanded, as has the number of available Netherfriends projects, but the three artists took a minute to have some fun and shoot this video, almost a year to-the-day of the song’s original release.  The video was shot here at the Kimball House, it features a lo-fi aesthetic, a plastic leg, a cameo from fellow Impolite member Khalfani, and Blakkass Westley making some of the creepiest facial expressions in a rap video since Redman’s “Time 4 Sum Aksion.”

Netherfriends – “Summer Sex” feat. Auggie the 9th

Did someone say something about a heat wave? Be safe, folks, and stay cool this summer by throwing on that VHS copy of Do The Right Thing you have in the garage, or by playing this joint from Netherfriends and Auggie the 9th.

“Summer Sex” can be heard on New CHI-t, the Hip-Hop mixtape Netherfriends dropped at the beginning of the month- featuring guest appearances from a host of Chicago artists.

Netherfriends on Vocalo’s Music Vox

P3ACE!

Netherfriends recently appeared on MusicVox, a music and talk program on Chicago’s public radio station, Vocalo. The one-man-band on-the-run discussed touring, the process of making his 50 Songs – 50 States project (dropping July 4th), and collaborating with Chicago Hip-Hop artists.

The MusicVox airs weekdays 4-6 PM on 90.7 FM (CHI)/89.5 (Northwest Indiana).  For more info, please visit vocalo.org

Quit your job. Give up your lease. Drive your car around the country for one year. Write and record a song in every state. That just might be the formula for writing a great album. At least that’s the one Netherfriends used to write his album – 50 Songs / 50 States. Shawn Rosenblatt, the man behind the project, joined Jesse Menendez to talk about his experiences traveling and producing the 50 song album as well as his newer endeavor – collaborating with Chicago’s hip hop community.

Premiering today on GoWhereHipHop, theWHOevers drop “Jurassic Park V” as part of their weekly #WHOWednesdays series. With Netherfriends on the beat,  Dotkom and J. Arthur sound as cool and collected as a hat-trick of Velociraptors on the hunt. Rawr.

While Steven Spielberg couldn’t be reached for comment, theWHOevers did offer the following statement:

WARNING: This record contains sounds never heard before!

the 3rd installment of theWHOwednesdays series. We follow last month’s record, “Roll of the Dice” with a collabo by none other than traveling music nomad himself, Netherfriends.

Like our beloved Chicago seasons, “Jurassic Park V” captures the essence of a smooth summer breeze, while slapping you in the face like the winter wind. Delivered with incredible ease, J.Arthur and Dotkom skillfully place complex delivery patterns over this super-snappy Netherfriends production. In the race for greatness, this team plans to “get to the top and keep on climbing” …

“Jurassic Park V” belongs to a Netherfriends compilation album titled “New CHI-t” with a proposed 06/28 release date that also features many of Chicago’s rising artists.

Grab the track below, and be sure to download New CHI-t when it drops at the end of June. For more music from theWHOevers, click here.
