Chicago Street Artist Profile: Jasso

This mini-documentary sheds some light on Jasso, a prominent artist in the Chicago street art scene. Also appearing in the video is Chandler London, who chimed in to say a couple words about Jasso and the ever-present interconnection between music and visual art.

Jasso has become a noticeable artist in the streets of Chicago. He started as a graffiti artist and then moved to work with stencil and wheat-pasting techniques. He plays with traditional icons from Mexican culture and mixes them up with US popular culture. His work could be offensive for some but uplifting for others. Here is Jasso.

 

Young Americans – “Cultural Stereotypes”

Fess Grandiose was on hand to contribute to the dialog featured in episode seven of “Young Americans” from Scion AV and VICE. Dealing with the theme of cultural stereotypes, Fess and the other participants confront issues of race and stereotype, and their respective effects on urban and rural life.

What does it mean about you when you live in a big city? What about a small town? How many of those stereotypes about culture and race and location are true?

After tackling issues that resonated in 2012, from college debt to social networking, season two of Scion AV and VICE’s Young Americans sees the return of Producer/Director Lance Bangs and company as they travel across the nation to capture real viewpoints and opinions from today’s youth.

In season two, ethnicity is the overarching lens through which Lance and his team focused in on some targeted topics such as body image, socializing and media representations. The end result was a documented survey of people from a wide array of ethnic communities hailing from all over the US.

Young Americans – “LGBT”

In episdoe five of “Young Americans” from Scion AV and VICE, Fess Grandiose addresses homophobia in Hip-Hop, and the compares today’s gay rights issues to the fight for civil rights in the 60s.

Gay rights and gender roles are explored in the sixth episode of the season, shining light on how these issues can very from ethnic group to ethnic group.
